You've probably heard or seen the terms "RBT® mock exams" or "RBT® practice exams" in social media. These are used interchangeably and mean the same thing! Mock exams are a great way to retain information, and there are scientific studies to prove it!
Practice exams are like diagnostic tools. They help you identify your strengths and weaknesses. Specifically, you can identify your weak spots in each area of behavior analysis covered by the RBT® exam. Once you know where you need to improve, you can focus your study efforts more effectively. With insights gained from your practice exam performance (whether good or bad), you can tailor your study plan to focus on areas that need improvement. This targeted approach can make your study prep time more efficient. (Work smarter, not harder, right?)
Studies Show Practice Tests Can Help Students
Practice tests are known to help students learn and remember information better compared to other methods like restudying or doing unrelated activities. This research, which analyzed various studies, confirms that practice tests are the most effective way to improve learning. The effectiveness of practice tests depends on factors like the type of test, who is taking it, what is being studied, and how the studies are conducted. Overall, this research shows that using practice tests is a valuable approach for students to improve learning.
Taking a memory test not only assesses what you know but also helps you remember information better later on, known as the testing effect. This study explored whether testing enhances learning merely because it allows for material review, and found that repeated studying improved recall compared to repeated testing. However, on delayed tests, prior testing led to significantly better retention compared to studying, even though studying made students more confident in their memory. This research demonstrates that testing is a beneficial way to enhance learning, not just evaluate it.
Taking a test on previously learned material, known as the testing effect, can significantly enhance your learning. This study conducted a meta-analysis to explore the impact of testing versus restudying on retention. The findings suggest that the testing effect is partly due to the mental effort involved, with recall tests being more beneficial than recognition tests. Following the logic of these findings, ABA students would do well to study using study materials such as the ABA Wizard study apps to gain knowledge and fluency, then taking a mock exam to solidify the knowledge gained.
